R.I.P Sir Bobby Robson

Friday, July 31st, 2009

News has broken this morning, that Sir Bobby Robson has finally lost his long running battle with Cancer :(   It’s such a shame that during his final few weeks, the club he loved was in such turmoil.  He’s managed to raise well over £1 million via his Bobby Robson Foundation which is targeting Cancer.

Bobby Robson Foundation

Bobby Robson defeated bowel cancer in 1992, a malignant melanoma in 1995, and a tumour in his right lung and a brain tumour, both in 2006. Treatment of these conditions had left him partially paralysed due to a stroke caused by the brain tumour, and also with a partially prosthetic upper jaw after the melanoma was surgically removed. His fifth diagnosis of cancer in 2007, consisting of cancerous nodules in both lungs, was diagnosed as terminal in February 2007, and as of December 2008 was being controlled through bouts of chemotherapy.[126]

After these experiences, following his fifth diagnosis with cancer, Bobby Robson decided to devote the remaining years of his life to helping fight the disease. On 25 March 2008 he launched the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. By November 2008 the Foundation had raised £1million.[127] The money raised by the Foundation funded equipment for the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre, in the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, and would go on to fund other cancer projects in the North East of England.[128]

In aid of the Foundation, Robson’s famous Italia ‘90 World Cup semi-final 4–3 loss after penalties against West Germany, was replayed on 26 July 2009 as the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy match at St James’ Park, featuring players from the original 1990 World Cup squads and other special guests.[129][130][131] Robson was given a guard of honour before the game, which finished 3–2 to the England side.[132]

Honours

Bobby Robson has been awarded a number of honours for his contributions to football. In 1990, at the end of his eight-year reign as England manager, he was awarded a CBE and in 2002, he was knighted; both awards were for services to football.[133][134]

In 2002 (during his time as Newcastle manager), the 69-year-old Robson was awarded the freedom of Newcastle upon Tyne and the UEFA President’s Award for ’services to football’.[11][20] He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2003 in recognition of his impact as a manager.[135] Following his time as Newcastle United manager in 2005, Robson was made an Honorary Freeman of Newcastle,[105] which, in his autobiography, he described as being “the proudest moment of my life”.[136]

Robson has also won the 1992 Football Writers’ Association Tribute Award for an outstanding contribution to the national game,[137] and the 2001 British Sports Writers’ Association Pat Besford Trophy for Outstanding Achievement.[134] In 2005 he received a lifetime achievement award from the Sports Coach UK Awards,[138] and was also awarded the Eircom International Personality of the Year in 2006.[133] On 9 December 2007, Robson (74) was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year show in recognition of “his contribution as both player and manager in a career spanning more than half a century”.[139]

On 5 May 2008, during the 30th anniversary celebrations of Ipswich Town’s 1978 FA Cup win, Robson was granted the Freedom of Ipswich by the Lady Mayor.[140] On 8 December 2008, he earned another such accolade when he was given the Freedom of the City of Durham.[141]

In March 2009, UEFA awarded Robson the Emerald UEFA Order of Merit award, awarded to “individuals who have dedicated their talents to the good of the game”.[142] The award was presented to Sir Bobby at St James’ Park on 26 July 2009, prior to the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy match [143]

Bobby Robson died on the morning of 31 July 2009.[144]

I’m just glad that he was there to witness the Sir Bobby Robson Trophy last weekend, before passing away peacefully at home this morning.  R.I.P Wor Bobby

Angry players chase ref!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I’ve once played football for a team that has had a player sent off TWICE in the same game over in Beeston one time, for fighting during the game, and then beating the guy AFTER we’d come off the pitch too, but we’ve never done anything like this Youtube video! Altho there have been many amateur players round Nottinghamshire that have wanted to chase a certain Mr Lee round the pitch after the most baffling of games! When ever he reffed our games on Saturdays, we NEVER finished with 11 men!!

I think the Benny Hill theme tune would be very apt for this video haha!

Wedding Dance Video

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Maddsy has sent me this link after he found it on Yahoo this morning! It’s funny as hell, and I reckon I should do something like this if i ermmm EVER find someone to marry    Either that or my sister better watch out, cos I’m sure me and Stef can boogie down the aisle like this!!

LINK TO WEDDING VIDEO

A Minnesota couple’s joyous wedding dance featuring the bride and groom boogieing down the aisle to the altar has become a Web sensation, racking up millions of views on YouTube.

The dance sequence opening the wedding ceremony of Kevin Heinz and Jill Peterson in St. Paul, Minnesota, has been viewed more than 4.75 million times since it went up on the video-sharing site less than a week ago.

In the five-minute video, ushers, bridesmaids and groomsmen shimmy down the aisle to the strains of the Chris Brown song “Forever” — and the surprise of the guests gathered in the church.

Happy 30th Birthday

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

To my mate CarolAnne.  Hope you have a great week in Scarborough, judging by your texts you are doing certainly that, and also hope you’re gonna get spoilt rotten today (and Kieran’s Chicken Pox has cleared up!!) :D

Happy Birthday to yoouuuuuuuu!

Happy Birthday to yoouuuuuuuu!

Went football training last night, and it was silly! Best part of about 18/20 people playing on a 1/3 of a football pitch.  Safe to say once you’d took a touch you’d have to pass and move.  Blisters on my feet gave me a bit of abuse, and I really need some football trainers! Playing in Reebok Classics aint too clever

China steel workers kill manager

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Holy crap! Couldn’t believe this when I heard Maddsy mention it this morning.  Thats pretty extreme!!

Chinese authorities have scrapped the takeover of a steel plant where workers killed a manager in fury at threatened job cuts, an official and state media said Monday.

Workers at the Tonghua Iron and Steel Group beat to death newly appointed manager Chen Guojun on Friday after he threatened to lay off up to 30,000 people in a controversial restructuring, the China Daily reported.

Chen was killed when about 3,000 company workers forced a production shutdown at the plant in northeast China’s Jilin province after an announcement that privately-owned Jianlong Group was taking over Tonghua, it said.

“Chen disillusioned workers and provoked them by saying most of them would be laid off in three days,” the China Daily quoted a local police officer identified only as Wang as saying.

Happy Birthday Father!

Monday, July 27th, 2009

First of all… Happy Birthday to my dad for yesterday, and also Happy Anniversary to Stevie and Maddsy who have somehow made it through yet another year together haha!  Hope you all had a great day, well I know my dad had a tiring one after playing golf, and then running up and downstairs to his computer to sort our Owen out

Secondly thanks to Melissa and Mr 6000 for giving me a little kick up the backside to update this blog more often!  I will try thats for suyre (Specially as my earnings are taking a dive these last 2 weeks or so booooo)

After the vigorous training regime of last week, in which we really did take our training to another level, I had a pretty lazy weekend.  In fact whilst my training partner is sunning himself up in Ayia Napa, I think I’m gonna have a lazy 2 weeks, altho the 2nd week is prob the ideal time to load up on the USN Anabolic Protein again, ready for some more hard training.  We did a super-set on the shoulders on Thursday and it’s safe to say that after training arms Wednesday I hurt like hell ALL day Friday.  God knows how I was able to lift anything Thursday night! Wed being the first time we’d trained JUST arms for so long, that I tried to touch my shoulders and it wouldnt happen, as my biceps were forcing my hands away, and likewise trying to straighten my arms, the triceps said NO!.  Few more sessions with Troy 2 and I think we’ll start to see some decent gains!

Football was fun again Friday, with me, Troy 1 (as he likes to be known now) and Teddy running the show as usual! I even through in a comedy header! Alanman curling one into the far corner, with the goalkeeper no-where to be seen, I threw myself into a diving header and cleared it off the line! When I could quite easily have just moved 2 steps to the side and chested the ball down and played from there.  Where would the fun have been in that tho.

I need to get away!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Well what a weekend that was just gone (I know it’s already Wednesday before I even got anywhere close to writing anything on this) My eyes have been terrible tho! Not stopped itching and that all weekend, but that comes from Friday night I suppose! Where better a place to start my little story

It was a wet and miserable Friday night football, but sometimes they’re just the best!  Sliding around and everything always makes it fun.  Me and Troy learnt a very valuable lesson (again) this weekend.  Don’t play football in the rain with gel in your hair! IT STINGS LIKE HELL!! Not being funny but checking my eyes in the changing rooms after they were red raw! I looked like some sort of Rabid Wiggy or something! Not very pretty to say the least.  Was an early-ish night as I was to be up at 6 for work :(

I seem to look VERY rough in that photo! I put it down to playing football in the rain with gel in my eyes, and a nasty lack of sleep that’s killing me for some reason :(

As promised Al was outside my door bout 6.20am and we met up with Karl on our way to McDonald’s on the Chesterfield roundabout, as we’d managed to get him into paying for out breakfast (little consolation for my usual high quality Debenhams breakfast but I didn’t pay so mustn’t grumble) Got to our destination and very quickly set about erecting the 8 marquees that were on hire.  It took us about 2 hours or so to put them all up, and they did look great (even if I say so myself being an employee of the firm haha!) Then after dropping Al off at work and disposing of the cardboard, me and Karl headed over to Eakring for another hire, which was postponed from the day before due to the shitty weather we’ve been having this neck of the woods lately.  Was home by 12 and found myself laid in bed for a few hours trying my hardest to catch up on a bit of sleep, but it seemed to be to no avail, as I just seemed to lay there :(

England gain the Ashes upper hand!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Wow! England have won only their 2nd Ashes test against the Aussies since 1896 at the home of Cricket! Well done lads.  Inspired by Freddies final test at Lords given his retirement from test cricket after this current series ends.  Lets hope we can go to Edgbaston with the confidence and make it 2-0 with 2 tests to play :D

England took a 1-0 lead in the Ashes series and ended a 75-year wait for a win against Australia at Lord’s as they wrapped up a 115-run win before lunch on the final day of the second Test.

Andrew Flintoff, in his final Test appearance at the famous old ground, defied his injuries to take three of the five wickets England needed in an extraordinary 10-over spell to finish with 3-43 on the day and 5-92 in the innings.

What promised to be a nervy morning for England fans soon became a more pleasant prospect when Flintoff, with a typically inspirational spell of Ashes bowling, picked up a wicket with his fourth ball of the day, the 10th in all.

More of the totally biased match report HERE

The thing is there is nothing more deadly than an Aussie cricket team with damaged price, so I’m expecting them to make a few changes and really have a go at England in the next test which starts 30th July!
