So I’ve been a member of the Blogging for Fun group for a while, but never taken part in any of their Fun Friday blog posts, but since I think this is a good one, I’m taking part. The theme for this post is looking up info from the year you were born. I’ve managed to find an article highlighting some of the stuff Melissa and the others in the group are to research.:
It was a time when Don McClean’s version of Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’ sat atop the singles chart, its glum chorus summing up a country struggling to emerge from the late-70s doldrums.
GDP had dropped by -1.8 per cent while unemployment, at 5.8 per cent or 1.56million, was still some 0.3 per cent or 360,000 short of today’s more painful figure.
While Britons got by on an average wage of £6,000 (the equivalent of about £19,000 today), petrol cost 28p a litre (90p), a pint of beer was 35p (£1.10), a loaf of bread 33p (£1.10) and a pint of milk 17p (54p).
At the month’s end, the pre-decimal sixpence was withdrawn from circulation. Later that summer, Alexandra Palace in London was part-destroyed by fire.
The Number one hit song during the week I was born was Kenny Rogers – “Coward of the County”

Thank you for joining in. By the way The Coward of the County, is a very cool song. My mom was a huge country fan, and we grew up with this kind of music. If you have any great ideas for Fun Friday topics, I would love to hear them. Have a great weekend.
Very cool. Except for the present-day prices, which are frankly terrifying. Not been back to the UK for 2.5 years, but will be over for a 3 week visit in July. No clue how my SA Rands will even manage to buy me basics.
oh,so i’m obviously older than you. i like don mclean but i’m not sure if i’ve heard his version of “crying.”
“coward of the county” made waves here in the Philippines too.
Your a lot younger than me too. The only Don Mclean songs I know are American Pie and Vincent’s Song. I was never a Country song fan, so Coward of the County is not familiar.
Glad you joined in on Fun Friday!
It’s good of you to join the fun this week. Coward of the County hit number one in 1980. I love that song!
Coward of the County and Crrryyying are great songs. The 80′s were fantastic years to be in my late teens early twentys – life was great, we had none of the worries of the world on our shoulders, we partied hard, worked hard – perfect years!
I’ve never heard of them songs I don’t recall. Not really my genre of music
